WEDNESDAY 13 MAY 2020: A LATE EVENING OFFICE

PREPARATION
OPENING PRAYER
Blessed be our God for all time, now and for evermore. Amen.

Glory to you, our God, glory be to you,  Holy Spirit, Comforter,  treasure of all goodness and giver of life,  come and dwell in us,  cleanse us from all sin,  and in your love bring us to salvation.
RESPONSORY
Holy God, holy and strong,  holy and immortal,  have mercy on us.

THE WORD OF GOD
PSALM
Psalm 30

Refrain: You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead. 1 I will exalt you, O Lord, because you have | raised me | up ■  and have not let my | foes | triumph | over me. 2 O | Lord my | God, ■ I cried out to | you and | you have | healed me. 3. You brought me up, O Lord, | from the | dead; ■ you restored me to life from among | those that go | down •to the | Pit. 4 Sing to the Lord, you | servants of | his; ■ give | thanks to his | holy | name. 5. For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, his favour | for a | lifetime. ■ Heaviness may endure for a night, but | joy comes | in the | morning.  Refrain: You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead.

6 In my prosperity I said, ‘I shall | never be | moved. ■  You, Lord, of your goodness, have | made my | hill so | strong.’ 7 Then you | hid your | face from me ■  and | I was | utterly dis|mayed. 8. To you, O | Lord, I | cried; ■  to the Lord I | made my | suppli|cation: 9 ‘What profit is there in my blood, if I go | down •to the | Pit? ■  Will the dust praise you | or de|clare your | faithfulness? 10. ‘Hear, O Lord, and have | mercy up|on me; ■  O | Lord, | be my | helper.’  Refrain: You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead.

11 You have turned my mourning | into | dancing; ■  you have put off my sackcloth and | girded | me with | gladness; 12 Therefore my heart sings to | you without | ceasing; ■  O Lord my God, I will | give you | thanks for | ever. Refrain: You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■  and to the Holy Spirit;  as it was in the beginning, is now, ■  and shall be for ever. Amen.

Psalm-Prayer Lord, you hide your face when we trust in ourselves; strip us of false security and re-clothe us in your praise, that we may know you as the one who raises us from death, as you raised your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

A READING
John 8: 31-38 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’ They answered him, ‘We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, “You will be made free”?’

Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there for ever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word. I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.’

MEDITATION
A period of meditation on the reading follows.

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE
NUNC DIMITTIS  The Song of Simeon  Luke 2: 29-32 1 Now, Lord, you let your servant | go in | peace: ■ your | word has | been ful|filled. 2 My own eyes have | seen the · sal|vation ■ which you have prepared in the | sight of | every | people. 3 A light to re|veal you · to the | nations ■ and the | glory · of your | people | Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■  and to the Holy Spirit;  as it was in the beginning, is now, ■ and shall be for ever. Amen.

MORNING PRAYER 1 – 10 MAY 2020 THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Opening Hymn: CH92 “How sweet the name of Jesus sounds”(vs. 1-4 and 6) How sweet the name of Jesus sounds  in a believer’s ear!  It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds,  and drives away our fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole  and calms the troubled breast;  ’tis manna to the hungry soul,  and to the weary, rest.

Dear Name! the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding place, my never-ending treasury, filled with boundless stores of grace.

Jesus, shepherd, guardian, friend,  my prophet, priest, and King,  my lord, my life, my way, my end,  accept the praise I bring.

Till then I would your love proclaim  with every fleeting breath;  and may the music of your name  refresh my soul in death.
John Newton (1725-1807)
SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE Christ is risen from the dead, and become the first-fruits of them that slept.              1 Corinthians 15: 20 Let us humbly confess our sins unto almighty God.
A GENERAL CONFESSION Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises
declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, And the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. O Lord, open thou our lips and our mouth shall show forth thy praise. God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.
FIRST CANTICLE
VENITE Psalm 95 1 O come, let us sing unto the Lord:    let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.

2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and shew ourselves glad in him with psalms.

3 For the Lord is a great God and a great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are all the corners of the earth and the strength of the hills is his also.

5 The sea is his, and he made it, and his hands prepared the dry land.

6 O come, let us worship and fall down and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

7 For he is the Lord our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

8 To-day if ye will hear his voice: harden not your hearts, as in the provocation and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness;

9 When your fathers tempted me, provèd me, and saw my works.
10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their hearts, for they have not known my ways;

11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath, that they should not enter into my rest.   Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A LESSON from the Old Testament
Acts 7: 55-60 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. ‘Look,’ he said, ‘I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ Then he fell on his knees and cried out, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he fell asleep. After the reading silence may be kept.
THE PSALM
Psalm 31: 1, 5, 11-12, 14-16, 24: “Father into your hands I commend my spirit”

Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

In you, O Lord, I take refuge let me never be put to shame; in your justice rescue me. Into your hands I commend my spirit; you will redeem me, O Lord, O faithful God!

For all my foes I am an object of reproach, a laughing-stock to my neighbours and a dread to my friends; they who see me abroad flee from me. I am forgotten like the unremembered dead I am like a dish that is broken.

But my trust is in you, O Lord. I say “You are my God, in your hands is my destiny. Rescue me from the clutches of my enemies and my persecutors”.

Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your kindness. Take courage and be stout-hearted  All you who hope in the Lord.

Tom Kendzia

A LESSON from the New Testament
1 Peter 2: 2-10 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, the living Stone – rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him – you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion,     a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him     will never be put to shame.’

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, ‘The stone the builders rejected     has become the cornerstone,’ and, ‘A stone that causes people to stumble     and a rock that makes them fall.’

They stumble because they disobey the message – which is also what they were destined for.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

After the reading silence may be kept.

Hymn before the Gospel: T&P 101 “My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine” (vs 1, 2 and 4) My Jesus, I love Thee, I know thou art mine; for thee all the follies of sin I resign; my gracious Redeemer, my Saviour art thou, If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

I love Thee, because thou hast first loved me, and purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree; I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow; if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

In mansions of glory and endless delight, I’ll ever adore thee in heaven so bright; I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow, if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

William R. Featherstone (1846-73)
A LESSON from the Gospels
John 14: 1-14  ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’
Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.’ Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’ Jesus answered: ‘Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. After the reading silence may be kept.

BENEDICTUS The Song of Zechariah    Luke 1: 68-79 1 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people, 2 And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 3 As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets which have been since the world began; 4 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate us, 5 To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 6 To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham: that he would give us, 7 That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 8 In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. 9 And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 10 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people, for the remission of their sins, 11 Through the tender mercy of our God whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us, 12 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED is said
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Hymn of Faith: CH625 “Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire”(vs. 1-4) Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire, unuttered or expressed; the motion of a hidden fire that trembles in the breast.

Prayer is the burden of a sigh, the falling of a tear, the upward glancing of an eye when none but God is near.

Prayer is the simplest form of speech that infant lips can try; prayer the sublimest strains that reach the Majesty on high.

Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath, the Christian’s native air, his watchword at the gates of death: he enters heaven with prayer.
James Montgomery (1771-1854) altd.
Kneel Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us and grant us thy salvation. O Lord, guide and defend our rulers and mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness and make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people and bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord, because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us and take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

THE COLLECTS
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY O Almighty God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE SECOND COLLECT For Peace O God, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom; Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE THIRD COLLECT For Grace O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CORONAVIRUS INTERCESSIONS Let us pray to God, who alone makes us dwell in safety:

For all who are affected by coronavirus, through illness or isolation or anxiety, that they may find relief and recovery: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For those who are guiding our nation at this time, and shaping national policies, that they may make wise decisions: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For doctors, nurses and medical researchers, that through their skill and insights many will be restored to health: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For the vulnerable and the fearful, for the gravely ill and the dying, that they may know your comfort and peace: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

We commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE SERMON

Closing Hymn: CH660 “Thine for ever! God of love” (vs 1, 2 and 4) Thine for ever! God of love, hear us from thy throne above; thine for ever may we be here and in eternity.

Thine for ever! Lord of life, shield us through our earthly strife; thou the Life, the Truth, the Way, guide us to the realms of day.

Thine for ever! O how blest they who find in thee their rest! Saviour, guardian, heavenly friend, O defend us to the end.

Thine for ever! Thou our guide, all our wants by thee supplied, all our sins by thee forgiven, lead us, Lord, from earth to heaven.
Mary F. Maude (1819-1913) PRAYERS
A Prayer for the President and all in authority Almighty God, who rulest over the kingdoms of the world; We commend to thy merciful care the people of this land, that being guarded by thy providence, they may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of this State and to all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness, that they may serve thy people faithfully to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Prayer for the Houses of the Oireachtas Almighty God, source of all authority and wisdom: guide by your Spirit those who represent us in Dáil and Seanad. As representatives of the people keep them humble, as legislators make them compassionate, and as politicians defend their integrity. So may the proceedings of the Oireachtas serve the truth and promote the common good. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the servant Lord. Amen. A Prayer for the Clergy and People Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our Bishops and Clergy, and all People committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.
O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially, we pray for the good estate of the Catholic Church; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [* especially those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.
A General Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, We thine unworthy servants Do give thee most humble and hearty thanks For all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us, and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation and all the blessings of this life: But above all, for thine inestimable love In the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; For the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, That our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, And that we show forth thy praise, Not only with our lips but in our lives; By giving up ourselves to thy service, And by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, To whom with thee and the Holy Spirit Be all honour and glory, World without end. Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13: 13

A READING

St. John 3:16-21 But the word of God continued to advance and gain adherents. Then after completing their mission Barnabas and Saul returned to Jerusalem and brought with them John, whose other name was Mark. Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the ruler, and Saul. While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ Then after
fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John also to assist them.

 The Fourth Sunday of Easter
Preparation

GREETING Alleluia! Christ is risen.   He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God.                                                1 Peter 1: 3, 21

OPENING PRAYER Lord Jesus Christ,  risen from death to life in the Father’s love,  raise us to share in the new life,  that we may know your presence among us now, and serve you in the power of the Spirit.  Amen.

Opening Hymn: CH336 “Jesus, where’re thy people meet” (vs. 1, 2, 4 and 5) Jesus, where’er thy people meet, there they behold thy mercy seat; where’er they seek thee, thou art found, and every place is hallowed ground.

For thou, within no walls confined, inhabitest the humble mind; such ever bring thee where they come, and going, take thee to their home.

Here may we prove the power of prayer to strengthen faith and sweeten care, to teach our faint desires to rise, and bring all heaven before our eyes.

Lord, we are few, but thou art near; nor short thine arm, nor deaf thine ear; O rend the heavens, come quickly down, and make a thousand hearts thine own.
William Cowper (1731-1800)

CONFESSION ‘The doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews; Jesus came and stood among them  and said, “Peace be with you.”’                  John 20:19

In this Easter season we bring our fears and failings to the risen Christ:

When we are faced with a challenge, but retreat into old attitudes … Lord, have mercy.             Lord, have mercy.

When we allow past hurts to undermine our present relationships … Christ, have mercy.       Christ, have mercy.

When we face difficult times but fail to trust in your loving purposes … Lord, have mercy.             Lord, have mercy.

When we look inwards to our selfish concerns rather than outwards to a world in need … Christ, have mercy.        Christ, have mercy.

When we are agents of gloom rather than messengers of hope … Lord, have mercy.             Lord, have mercy.

May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.            Amen.

JUBILATE: Psalm 100 1 O shout to the Lord in triumph | all the | earth;  serve the Lord with gladness and come before his | face with | songs of | joy.

2 Know that the Lord | he is | God;  it is he who has made us and we are his we are his | people · and the | sheep of · his | pasture.

3 Come into his gates with thanksgiving and into his | courts with | praise;  give thanks to him and | bless his | holy | name.
4 For the Lord is good his loving mercy | is for | ever,  his faithfulness through|out all | gener|ations.

Glory to the Father, and | to the | Son,  and | to the | Holy | Spirit; as it was in the be|ginning, is | now,  and shall be for | ever. | A|men.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Let us pray that we may experience transformation in our own lives: Almighty God,  whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life: Raise us, who trust in him, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness, that we may seek those things which are above, where he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Ministry of the Word

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Send your Holy Spirit upon us, that your Word may take root in the secret places of our hearts and bear much fruit to your glory. Amen.

The First Reading: Acts 2: 42-47 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

The Psalm: T&P 147 “The Lord’s my shepherd”  The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want; He makes me lie in pastures green. He leads me by the still, still waters, his goodness restores my soul.

And I will trust in you alone, And I will trust in you alone, For your endless mercy follows me, your goodness will lead me home.

He guides my ways in righteousness, and he anoints my head with oil, and my cup, it overflows with joy, I feast on his pure delights.

And though I walk the darkest path, I will not fear the evil one, for you are with me, and your rod and staff are the comfort I need to know.
Stuart Townend (b.1963) based on Psalm 23

The Second Reading:  1 Peter 2: 19-25 For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin,     and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Hymn before the Gospel : CH644 “Faithful Shepherd, feed me” Faithful Shepherd, feed me in the pastures green; faithful Shepherd, lead me where thy steps are seen.

Hold me fast, and guide me in the narrow way; so, with thee beside me, I shall never stray.

Daily bring me nearer to the heavenly shore; may my faith grow clearer, may I love thee more:

Hallow every pleasure, every joy and pain; be thyself my treasure, though none else I gain.

Day by day prepare me as thou see is best, then let angels bear me to thy promised rest.

Thomas B. Pollock (1836-96) altd.

The Gospel: John 10: 1-10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

THE SERMON

COLLECT OF THE WORD God of all power,  you called from death our Lord Jesus,  the great shepherd of the sheep; send us as shepherds to rescue the lost, to heal the injured, and to feed one another with understanding;  through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,  one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Responding

ACCLAMATION OF FAITH Let us declare our faith in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ:  Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; he was buried; he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; afterwards he appeared to his followers, and to all the apostles: this we have received, and this we believe.                           1 Corinthians 15: 3-7

This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God,  Father, Son and Holy Spirit.         Amen.

INTERCESSIONS Our loving Father in heaven, as we recall the change that came over the disciples when they met the risen Christ on that first Easter Day, we pray for the renewal of faith, hope and love among your people today:

We pray for our fellow human beings living in fear of persecution and violence …  Strengthen their hope that peace and justice will prevail.  Guide our President Michael D and the leaders of the nations. At Easter, Lord,
renew our hope in your victory over evil.

We pray for those who, like Thomas, struggle with doubts and hard questions …  Make yourself known to them through the good news that Christ is alive, and through the witness of his followers. At Easter, Lord, renew us by your Spirit.

We pray for those who, like the disciples, are burdened by guilt, failure or grief …  Give them a fresh awareness of Christ’s love and forgiveness.   At Easter, Lord, renew our joy in your amazing grace.

We pray for all who are sent into the world to bear witness to Christ;  for bishop Michael, for ministers and missionaries …  Lead us by your Holy Spirit into new ways of serving you. At Easter, Lord, renew our commitment to your service.

We pray for those who are ill or frail …  Grant them healing and encouragement. At Easter, Lord, renew our trust in your fatherly care.

We remember those who have died … We join with all Christians in lifting our voices  to proclaim the living Christ as our Lord and our God. Amen.

PRAYERS ABOUT THE CURRENT CRISIS Merciful God, we entrust to your tender care those who are ill or in pain, knowing that whenever danger threatens your everlasting arms are there to hold. In your will, comfort and heal them, and restore them to health and strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gracious God, give skill, sympathy and resilience to all who are caring for the sick, and your wisdom to those searching for a cure. Strengthen them with your Spirit, that through their work many will be restored to health; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GENERAL COLLECT Heavenly Father, in whom we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray that your Holy Spirit
may so guide and govern us that in all the cares and occupations of our daily life, we may never forget your presence but may remember that we are always walking in your sight, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Let us sum up our prayers and praises in the words our Saviour Christ has taught us and say: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Going out as God’s People

Closing Hymn: CH593 “O Jesus, I have promised” (vs. 1-4) Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou forever near me, my Master and my Friend; I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

O let me feel thee near me! The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self will. O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul.

O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.

DISMISSAL PRAYER May the road rise up to meet us. May the wind be always at our backs. May the sun shine warm upon our faces; the rains fall soft upon our fields and until we meet again, may God hold us in the palm of his hand. Amen.

BLESSING God the Father,  by whose glory Christ was raised from the dead,  strengthen you to walk with him in his risen life: and the blessing of God Almighty,  the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be with you and remain with you always.  Amen.  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

THE WORD OF GOD
PSALM
A Psalm or Psalms as appointed or the following psalm:  Psalm 23  Dominus regit me.  1 The Lord is my shepherd ■     therefore can I lack nothing.  2 He shall feed me in a green pasture ■    and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.  3 He shall convert my soul ■    and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for his Name’s sake.  4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,     I will fear no evil ■    For thou art with me;     thy rod and thy staff comfort me.  5 Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me ■    thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.  6 But thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me     all the days of my life ■    and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.  Glory be to the Father, ■ and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;  as it was in the beginning, ■ is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A READING
John 21: 1-14 After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We will go with you.’ They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, ‘Children, you have no fish, have you?’ They answered him, ‘No.’ He said to them, ‘Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’ When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the lake. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off.

When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.’ So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

April Announcement Sheet

At the end of last month, things were in a state of flux. It was becoming clear that services would not be possible in Nun’s Cross church for a period and plans were being made on an ad hoc basis for Holy Week and Easter. Subsequently, it was decided to hold online services and to make postings on YouTube.

Now it is clear that we will not be returning to a church setting for many months and a new pattern has emerged.

Regular Service

Services are now being held online on a consistent basis via a video conferencing program called zoom which may be downloaded from www.zoom.us. A link is provided in advance on the parish website, together with the service leaflet.

If you would like service leaflets delivered to you either by email or to your home, please contact Rev Ken who is compiling a list of such requests.

During this Easter Season, there will be a Sunday service and a Wednesday evening service each week. The latter will take place on Wednesday evenings, last between 20 and 25 minutes and be held jointly with Wicklow parish.

Cocooned?

If you are over 70 or otherwise required to stay indoors and if you need assistance with the likes of shopping and obtaining prescriptions, please contact Revd Ken who has a list of various people who are happy to assist. He can marry up the requests with the offers of assistance.

Ashford Country Fair

Ashford Country Fair was due to take place on May Bank Holiday Monday. It was postponed due to the Coronavirus emergency. At this point it is unclear whether it can take place later in the year or will need to be cancelled. Further information will be available next month.
