MORNING PRAYER 1
THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
Opening Hymn: CH6 “Immortal, invisible, God only wise”
Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice, like mountains high soaring above thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.
To all, life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish, but nought changeth Thee.
Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render; O help us to see ’tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1: 8, 9
Let us humbly confess our sins unto almighty God.
A GENERAL CONFESSION
Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

A LESSON from the Old Testament Isaiah 45: 1-7
Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes,
to open doors before him— and the gates shall not be closed: I will go before you and level the mountains,
I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen,
I call you by your name,
I surname you, though you do not know me. I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides me there is no god.
I arm you, though you do not know me, so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the Lord do all these things.

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does his successive journeys run; his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more.

People and realms of every tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song, and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his name.

Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?’ But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, ‘Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.’ And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and whose title?’ They answered, ‘The emperor’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

The Song of Zechariah Luke 1: 68-79
- Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
- And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
- As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets which have been since the world began;
- That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate us,
- To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
- To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham:
that he would give us,
- That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

THE APOSTLES’ CREED is said
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;

He descended into hell.

THE THIRD COLLECT For Grace
O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. INTERCESSIONS
God of grace and peace,
We rejoice that you have chosen us, And empowered us by your Spirit.
Lead us, that we may lead others,
Guide us, that we may be the people you would have us be.
Direct us, that we may do what you would have us do. Spirit of God, guide and strengthen us.
May we show your love and your salvation in our lives,
that the church may ever order its priorities, that it may grow in holiness and in outreach.
We pray for the mission of your church to all who are trapped by materialism.
We remember all who those fooled by the glitter and false promises of our society. Spirit of God, guide and strengthen us.
We pray for all who hunger for goodness and righteousness, for all who serve you by serving others.
We pray for world leaders and all who influence our future,
for all those who work with the press or broadcasting or in social media, for artists, musicians and writers, for all who seek to care for and improve our environment. Spirit of God, guide and strengthen us.
May we set a good example by the way we live. Let our homes be places of grace and goodness, of hospitality and holiness.
We pray for good relationships and honest dealings. We remember homes where loved ones are betrayed, where relationships are breaking down. Spirit of God, guide and strengthen us.
We pray for all who are weak, for the weak-willed and the weak-minded, for all who are led into crime or vice.
We pray for all who work for the rehabilitation of addicts or criminals. We pray for those who have lost their way and are caught up in darkness.
We remember the depressed, the despairing, and all who have lost vision or hope.
We pray for all in sickness, especially for those who have contracted the coronavirus. Spirit of God, guide and strengthen us.
We entrust to your love and care our friends and loved ones in this world, and those who have departed from our sight.
We pray that we may all at the last share in the joy and peace of your kingdom. Spirit of God, guide and strengthen us.
PRAYERS
A Prayer for the President and all in authority
Almighty God, who rulest over the kingdoms of the world; We commend to thy merciful care the people of this land, that being guarded by thy providence, they may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of this State and to all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness, that they may serve thy people faithfully to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the Houses of the Oireachtas
Almighty God, source of all authority and wisdom: guide by your Spirit those who represent us in Dáil and Seanad. As representatives of the people keep them humble, as legislators make them compassionate, and as politicians defend their integrity. So may the proceedings of the Oireachtas serve the truth and promote the common good. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the servant Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the Clergy and People
Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our Bishops and Clergy, and all People committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.
O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially, we pray for the good estate of the Catholic Church; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life.
