PREPARATION
OPENING PRAYER
The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
Amen.
Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.
A period of silence for reflection on the past day follows.
Most merciful God,
we confess to you,
before the whole company of heaven and one another,
that we have sinned in thought, word and deed
and in what we have failed to do.
Forgive us our sins,
heal us by your Spirit
and raise us to new life in Christ. Amen.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

God of compassion,

Matthew 15: 1-9
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, ‘Why do your disciples break the
tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands before they eat.’ He answered them,
And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said,
Honour your father and your mother,” and, “Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely
ie.” But you say that whoever tells father or mother, “Whatever support you might have had from
me is given to God”, then that person need not honour the father. So, for the sake of your
tradition, you make void the word of God. You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you
when he said: “This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain
do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.”’

Almighty God,
you have knit together your elect
in one communion and fellowship
in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord:
Grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints
in all virtuous and godly living
that we may come to those inexpressible joys
that you have prepared for those who truly love you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Visit our homes, O Lord, we pray,
and drive far from them the snares of the enemy;
may your holy angels dwell with us and guard us in peace,
and may your blessing be always upon us;

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Uniting our prayers with the whole company of heaven,
let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil. Amen.
THE ENDING
In peace we will lie down and sleep:
for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.
Abide with us, Lord Jesus,
for the night is at hand and the day is now past.
As the night watch looks for the morning,
so do we look for you, O Christ.
