Wednesday 2 December 2020: Evening Prayer

GREETING
The Lord be with you
and also with you.

VERSICLES AND RESPONSES
Almighty God, come and revive us.
Shine upon us and we shall be saved.
God himself gives us his joy
and our land yields its fruit.
Justice will walk before him,
peace comes in his footsteps.
Praise to Him who is coming: the King, in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Amen.

PENITENCE
Let us confess our sins to God our Father.
Silence
Heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault;
by what we have done
and by what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.
Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD
A PSALM
Psalm 79
O God, the nations have come into your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple;
they have laid Jerusalem in ruins.
They have given the bodies of your servants
to the birds of the air for food,
the flesh of your faithful to the wild animals of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was no one to bury them.
We have become a taunt to our neighbours,
mocked and derided by those around us.
How long, O Lord? Will you be angry for ever?
Will your jealous wrath burn like fire?
Pour out your anger on the nations
that do not know you,
and on the kingdoms
that do not call on your name.
For they have devoured Jacob
and laid waste his habitation.
Do not remember against us the iniquities of our ancestors;
let your compassion come speedily to meet us,
for we are brought very low.
Help us, O God of our salvation,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us, and forgive our sins,
for your name’s sake.
Why should the nations say,
‘Where is their God?’
Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants
be known among the nations before our eyes.
Let the groans of the prisoners come before you;
according to your great power preserve those doomed to die.
Return sevenfold into the bosom of our neighbours
the taunts with which they taunted you, O Lord!
Then we your people, the flock of your pasture,
will give thanks to you for ever;
from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

BIBLE RESPONSORY
O Lord, make us see your love!
O Lord, make us see your love!
Grant us your salvation,
Your love!
Glory to the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
O Lord, make us see your love!
MAGNIFICAT The Song of the Blessed Virgin Mary Luke 1 : 46-55
My soul proclaims the greatness· of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
who has looked with favour on his lowly servant;
from this day all generations will call me blessed;
the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his name.
God has mercy on those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
The Lord has shown strength· with his arm
and scattered the proud in their conceit,
casting down the mighty from their thrones
and lifting up the lowly.
God has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the aid of his servant Israel.
to remember the promise of mercy,
The promise made to our forebears,
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory to the Father, and | to the | Son, ♦
and | to the | Holy | Spirit;
as it was in the be|ginning, is | now, ♦
and shall be for | ever. | A|men.

A READING
Micah 5: 1-5a
Now you are walled around with a wall;
siege is laid against us;
with a rod they strike the ruler of Israel
upon the cheek.
But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah,
who are one of the little clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to rule in Israel,
whose origin is from of old,
from ancient days.
Therefore he shall give them up until the time
when she who is in labour has brought forth;
then the rest of his kindred shall return
to the people of Israel.
And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great
to the ends of the earth;
and he shall be the one of peace.

ADDRESS
PRAYER
Let us pray.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Heaven, shed your dew; Clouds, rain down salvation;
Earth, bring forth the Saviour.
O Wisdom, from the mouth of the Most High;
you reign over all thing to the ends of the earth;
come and teach us the way of wisdom.
Lord Jesus, come soon!
O Lord, and Head of the house of Israel;
you appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush
and you gave him the law on Sinai;
come with outstretched arm and ransom us.
Lord Jesus, come soon!
O Branch of Jesse, standing as a sign among the nations;
before you kings will keep silence,
and peoples will summon you to their aid;
come, set us free and delay no more.
Lord Jesus, come soon!
O Key of David, and Sceptre of the House of Israel;
you open and none can shut,
you shut and none can open;
come, and free the captive from prison.
Lord Jesus, come soon!
O Morning Star, Splendour of the Light eternal
And bright Sun of Justice;
come and enlighten all who live in darkness,
and in the shadow of death.
Lord Jesus, come soon!
O King of the nations; you alone can fulfil their desires;
Cornerstone, you make opposing nations one;
come and save us.
You formed us all from the clay.
Lord Jesus, come soon!
O Emmanuel, Hope of the nations and their Saviour;
come and save us, Lord our God.
Lord Jesus, come soon!
The Spirit and the Bride say, Come!
Amen! Lord Jesus, come soon!

COLLECTS
The Lord be with you,
and also with you.
Let us continue praying to the Lord.
Silence
Collect for Advent
Almighty God,
Give us grace to cast away the works of darkness
and to put on the armour of light
now in the time of this mortal life
in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility;
that on the last day
when he shall come again in his glorious majesty
to judge the living and the dead,
we may rise to the life immortal;
through him who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
General Collect
O God,
the voice of the prophets and their whole lives,
announced the coming of your salvation;
may we in our turn faithfully live Christ for others,
until that Day when we shall see him face to face
as he comes to save us all;
grant this through Jesus, your Christ, our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
As we look for his coming, we sum up our prayers in the words our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven:
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory
for ever and ever. Amen.

THE ENDING
Holy, Holy, Holy, God the Lord!
Sovereign Ruler of all the world.
He was, he is and he is coming.
Yes, he is close at hand.
Let us bless the Lord.
We give our thanks to God.
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself,
and God our Father who has loved us
and given us by his grace eternal consolation and joyful hope,
comfort our hearts
and strengthen them in every good word and work. Amen.
