Evening Prayer

14th September, 2022.

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Psalm 94

Lord God, to whom vengeance belongs, O God to whom vengeance belongs, shine out in majesty.

Rise up, O judge of the earth; give the arrogant their just deserts.

Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

How long shall the evildoers boast and pour out such impudent words?

They crush your people, O Lord, and afflict your heritage. They murder the widow and the stranger; the orphans they put to death.

And yet they say, ‘The Lord will not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.’

Consider, most stupid of people; you fools, when will you understand?

He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? He that formed the eye, shall he not see?

He who corrects the nations, shall he not punish? He who teaches the peoples, does he lack knowledge?

The Lord knows every human thought, that they are but a breath.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

As our evening prayer rises like incense before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

St. Luke 22:31-33, 54-62

‘Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death!’

Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house. But Peter was following at a distance. When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. Then a servant-girl, seeing him in the firelight, stared at him and said, ‘This man also was with him.’ But he denied it, saying, ‘Woman, I do not know him.’ A little later someone else, on seeing him, said, ‘You also are one of them.’ But Peter said, ‘Man, I am not!’ Then about an hour later yet another kept insisting, ‘Surely this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean.’ But Peter said, ‘Man, I do not know what you are talking about!’ At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, ‘Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times.’ And he went out and wept bitterly.

Address

Canticle: Nunc Dimittis

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
