EVENING PRAYER – Wednesday 11th May 2022
The Greeting
Christ is risen The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!
Prayer of Approach
Heavenly Father, we gather tonight to focus our minds on you and celebrate your love for us, to hear your words of scripture and bring our concerns in prayer.
For all that you are and the meaning you give to our lives,
we give you thanks and praise, Amen
Penitence
Lord Jesus, the words you speak to us are spirit and life.
Lord, have mercy Lord, have mercy
Lord Jesus, you have the words of eternal life.
Christ, have mercy Christ, have mercy
Lord Jesus, we have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.
Lord, have mercy Lord, have mercy
When we repent of our sins, God forgives us and sets us free.
May we forgive others, and forgive ourselves and so come to our God in peace. Amen
Collect
In every age, O God, you give your people freedom to walk in faith or to turn away. Grant us grace to remain faithful to your Holy One whose words are spirit and life, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever. Amen
Canticle – the Easter Anthems
Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us,
therefore let us celebrate the feast
Not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Christ, once raised from the dead dies no more,
death has no more dominion over him.
In dying, he died to sin once for all, in living he lives to God.
See yourselves therefore as dead to sin
and alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who sleep.
For as by man came death, by man has come also the resurrection of the dead.
For as in Adam all die even so in Christ shall all be made alive
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.
Psalm 100 – A Psalm for giving grateful praise.
1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.
Reading – John: 10 verses 31 – 42
31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”
33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”
34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”]? 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside— 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” 39 Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.
40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.” 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.
Few thoughts
The Response to God’s Word
Do you believe and trust in God the Father, who made the world? I believe and trust in him
Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ, who redeemed mankind?
I believe and trust in him.
Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit who gives life to the people of God?
I believe and trust in him.
This is the faith of the Church.
This is our faith. we believe and trust in One God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Prayers of the People.
Jesus, our Lord and our Master Response – Hear our prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Prayer for the Road Ahead
Lord, as we continue with our week, help us to make choices that will be life-giving for us and for those with whom we journey. Give us wisdom, grace and insight to discern what is best to do. May your words nourish and inspire us so that we will help to make your project of the Kingdom of God a reality in our lives and in the world. Amen
The Blessing
Wherever you go, God will be with you to hold, to heal, to guide and to bless,
Go then in peace assured of his love
and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you always. Amen.
