Wednesday 8 September 2021: Evening Prayer

Lord God, mighty God,
you are the creator of the world.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, Son of God and Son of Mary,
you are the Prince of Peace.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Holy Spirit,
by your power the Word was made flesh
and came to dwell among us.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

O Lord, open our lips

and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Praise the Lord.

The Lord’s name be praised.

Psalm 132

1  Lord, remember for David ♦︎

all the hardships he endured;

2  How he swore an oath to the Lord ♦︎

and vowed a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:

3  ‘I will not come within the shelter of my house, ♦︎

nor climb up into my bed;

4  ‘I will not allow my eyes to sleep, ♦︎

   nor let my eyelids slumber,

5  ‘Until I find a place for the Lord, ♦︎

a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.’

6  Now, we heard of the ark in Ephrathah ♦︎

and found it in the fields of Ja-ar.

7  Let us enter his dwelling place ♦︎

and fall low before his footstool.

8  Arise, O Lord, into your resting place, ♦︎

you and the ark of your strength.

9  Let your priests be clothed with righteousness ♦︎

and your faithful ones sing with joy.

10  For your servant David’s sake, ♦︎

turn not away the face of your anointed.

11  The Lord has sworn an oath to David, ♦︎

a promise from which he will not shrink:

12  ‘Of the fruit of your body ♦︎

shall I set upon your throne.

13  ‘If your children keep my covenant

and my testimonies that I shall teach them, ♦︎

their children also shall sit upon your throne for evermore.’

14  For the Lord has chosen Zion for himself; ♦︎

he has desired her for his habitation:

15  ‘This shall be my resting place for ever; ♦︎

here will I dwell, for I have longed for her.

16  ‘I will abundantly bless her provision; ♦︎

her poor will I satisfy with bread.

17  ‘I will clothe her priests with salvation, ♦︎

and her faithful ones shall rejoice and sing.

18  ‘There will I make a horn to spring up for David; ♦︎

I will keep a lantern burning for my anointed.

19  ‘As for his enemies, I will clothe them with shame; ♦︎

but on him shall his crown be bright.’

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now,

and shall be for ever. Amen.

Luke 11: 27-28

While he was saying this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, ‘Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you!’ But he said, ‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!’

MAGNIFICAT                         The Song of the Virgin Mary           Luke 1: 46-55

Thanks & Praise 222

My soul rejoices in God, my Saviour.

My spirit finds its joy in God, the living God.

My soul proclaims your mighty deeds.

My spirit sings the greatness of your name.

Your mercy flows throughout the land

and every generation knows your love.

You cast the mighty from their thrones

and raise the poor and lowly to new life.

You fill the hungry with good things.

With empty hands you send the rich away.

Just as you promised Abraham,

you come to free your people, Israel.

Owen Alstott (b. 1947)

based on the Canticle Magnificat

Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Show us your mercy, O Lord,

and grant us your salvation.

Let your ministers be clothed with righteousness

and let your servants shout for joy.

O Lord, save your people

and bless those whom you have chosen.

Give peace in our time, O Lord,

and let your glory be over all the earth.

O God, make clean our hearts within us

and renew us by your Holy Spirit.

O God

from whom all holy desires all good judgements

and all just works proceed:

Give to your servants

that peace which the world cannot give,

that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments,

and that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies,

may pass our time in rest and quietness;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

Lighten our darkness, O Lord, we pray

and in your great mercy defend us

from all perils and dangers of this night;

for the love of your only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Let us continue praying to our ever-living God,

through whose providence

and with the willing acceptance of his servant Mary,

he sent his only begotten Son

to be Emmanuel, God with us.

O Son of God and Son of Mary,

your mother found favour with God . . .

your mother was your handmaid . . .

Help us to follow her example.

Your mother praised you . . .

your mother rejoiced in her Saviour . . .

your mother is blessed by all generations . . .

Help us to follow her example.

Your mother pondered your meaning . . .

your mother watched out for you . . .

your mother saw your mighty deeds . . .

Help us to follow her example.

Your mother stood near the cross  . . .

your mother was pierced in her soul  . . .

your mother devoted herself to prayer . . .

Help us to follow her example.

God our Father,

through Jesus Christ,

born of the virgin Mary,

you brought salvation to the world.

We thank you for showing your favour.

You made Mary a dwelling place for your Son

and now he lives in us.

We thank you for showing your favour.

You chose Mary to be the mother of your Son

and have chosen us to be a holy nation.

We thank you for showing your favour.

You came upon Mary with the Holy Spirit

and have given him to be our Comforter.

We thank you for showing your favour.

You blessed Mary among all women

and have blessed us more than we deserve.

We thank you for showing your favour.

Almighty God,

who looked upon the lowliness of the Blessed Virgin Mary

and chose her to be the mother of your only Son:

Grant that we who are redeemed by his blood

may share with her in the glory of your eternal kingdom;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say

Our Father, who art in heaven:

Hallowed be thy Name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory

for ever and ever. Amen.

Christ the Son of God, born of Mary,

fill you with his grace

to trust his promises and obey his will

and the blessing of God Almighty,

the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit

be with you and remain with you always. Amen.
