Blessed be our God for all time, now and for evermore. Amen.

Glory to you, our God, glory be to you, Holy Spirit, Comforter, treasure of all goodness and giver of life, come and dwell in us, cleanse us from all sin, and in your love bring us to salvation.

Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

Psalm 67 – With stringed instruments. A psalm. A song.

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us
so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.

May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you.
May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity
and guide the nations of the earth.
May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you

The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.
May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever, Amen.

Reading – Mark 9 v 14 – 29 – Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me”. So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” 23 “‘If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer”

Meditation.

Reflection – Heal us, Emmanuel Heal us, Emmanuel! we are here, waiting to feel thy touch: Deep-wounded souls to thee repair, and Saviour, we are such. Our faith is feeble, we confess, we faintly trust thy Word: But wilt thou pity us the less? Be that far from Thee, Lord!  Remember him who once applied, with trembling for relief: “Lord, I believe” with tears he cried, “O help my unbelief!” She too, who touched Thee in the press, and healing virtue stole, Was answered “Daughter, go in peace; thy faith hath made thee whole”.  Like her, with hopes and fears we come, to touch Thee, if we may: Send us not despairing home, send none unhealed away.

Prayers

Almighty and ever living God, we ask you to hear the prayers we offer in faith.

For the peace that comes from God alone, for the unity of all peoples, and for our salvation

Let us pray to the Lord                        Lord, have mercy

For the Church of Christ, for Michael our Bishop, for Neal our Archdeacon, for Rev Jack and Rev Ken and all the people of God,

Let us pray to the Lord                        Lord, have mercy

For the nations of the world, for our government and all in authority,

Let us pray to the Lord                        Lord, have mercy

For this country, for our church community, for our neighbours and our friends,

Let us pray to the Lord                        Lord, have mercy

For the good earth which God has given us, and for the wisdom and will to conserve it,

Let us pray to the Lord                        Lord, have mercy

For the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, for the sick and suffering and for all in need of God’s healing touch at this time,

Let us pray to the Lord                        Lord, have mercy

For the poor and the oppressed, for the unemployed and the destitute, for prisoners and captives, and for all who remember and care for them,

Let us pray to the Lord                        Lord, have mercy

For the dying, for those who mourn, for the faithful whom we entrust to the Lord in hope, as we look forward to the day when we share the fulness of the resurrection.

Let us pray to the Lord                        Lord, have mercy

Let us continue praying in a time of open prayer.

A period of open prayer follows.

Lord, in your mercy                hear our prayer

We sum up all our prayers in the words Jesus himself taught us –

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Common Collect – Lord Almighty, come and scatter the darkness of our hearts by the light of your presence: that we may know you the light of the World and the one true God, blessed this night and for evermore. Amen

A Thanksgiving – Let us give thanks to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

For the love of our Father, the maker of all, the giver of all good things,

Let us bless the Lord                           Thanks be to God.

For Jesus Christ our Saviour, who lived and worked among us,

Let us bless the Lord                           Thanks be to God.

For his suffering and death on the cross and his resurrection to new life,

Let us bless the Lord                           Thanks be to God.

For his rule over all things and his presence in the world,

Let us bless the Lord                           Thanks be to God.

For the Holy Spirit, the giver of life, who teaches us and guides us,

Let us bless the Lord                           Thanks be to God.

For the grace of the Spirit in the work of the Church and the life of the world,

Let us bless the Lord                           Thanks be to God.

We go into the world

To walk in God’s light, to rejoice in God’s love and to reflect God’s glory.

Dismissal and Blessing

Loving God, draw near to all through Jesus Christ. Grant the peace of your presence, the healing of your touch, the blessing of your guidance and the assurance of your constant love so that all who are weary may walk in hope and look forward in faith, Lord of life, renew their strength and refresh their spirits.

May the Almighty and merciful God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, bless us and keep us this night.  Amen.
