A Late Evening Office – St Peter’s Day – Wed 29th June 2022

Blessed be our God for all time, now and for evermore. Amen.                                                                 Glory to you, our God, glory be to you, Holy Spirit, Comforter, treasure of all goodness and giver of life, come and dwell in us, cleanse us from all sin, and in your love, bring us to salvation.

Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

Psalm 138

I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your unfailing love and your faithfulness, for you have so exalted your solemn decree that it surpasses your fame.
When I called, you answered me; you greatly emboldened me.

May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord, when they hear what you have decreed.
May they sing of the ways of the Lord, for the glory of the Lord is great.

Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life.
You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me.
The Lord will vindicate me; your love, Lord, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,                                                                            as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever, Amen.

Reading – John 21 v 15 – 22 – Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

Few thoughts

Saint Peter’s Day Collect

O ALMIGHTY God, who by thy Son Jesus Christ didst give to thy Apostle Saint Peter many excellent gifts, and commandedst him earnestly to feed thy flock: Make, we beseech thee, all Bishops and Pastors diligently to preach thy holy Word, and the people obediently to follow the same, that they may receive the crown of everlasting glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS

Let us pray to the Lord with all our heart and with all our soul,

Lord, in your mercy                       Hear our prayer

Let us pray for all Christian people, that they may be obedient to your word and faithful to your call.

Lord, in your mercy                       Hear our prayer

Let us pray for all ministers of the Church and for our brothers and sisters in Christ, thinking particularly of those who do not have the freedom to gather and worship in peace.

Lord, in your mercy                       Hear our prayer

Let us pray for peace throughout the world, and for all governments. We pray for peace in Ukraine and for the millions of people who have been killed, injured, bereaved and displaced due to the war.

Lord, in your mercy                       Hear our prayer

Let us pray for our neighbours and for all our friends, for those who dislike us as we pray for those who love us. Help us all Lord to live in harmony regardless of race, religion, background or gender.

Lord, in your mercy                       Hear our prayer

Let us pray for all those who are travelling for work or pleasure, keep them safe on road, rail, air and sea.

Lord, in your mercy                       Hear our prayer

Let us pray for all sick people, for the sorrowful and the dying.

In a few moments of silence, we think of people known to us and those we hold dear ……………………………………

Lord, in your mercy                      Hear our prayer

Let us remember our brothers and sisters who have entered into eternal rest

Lord, in your mercy                       Hear our prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever.  Amen.

Dismissal

Sovereign God, send us out in the name of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. We have worshipped, now help us to serve. We have spoken, now help us to act. We have heard your word, now help us to make it known. We have rejoiced in your love, now help us to share it with other. Use us for your will and for your kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen
