A SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE

Brethren, be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist, steadfast in the faith.                                                                      1 Peter 5: 8, 9

THE WORD OF GOD

PSALM

Psalm 31:1-6

1 In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust: ■

let me never be put to confusion, deliver me in thy righteousness.

2 Bow down thine ear to me ■

make haste to deliver me.

3 And be thou my strong rock, and house of defence ■:

that thou mayest save me.

4 For thou art my strong rock, and my castle ■

be thou also my guide, and lead me for thy name’s sake.

5 Draw me out of the net, that they have laid privily for me, ■

for thou art my strength.

6 Into thy hands I commend my spirit, ■

for thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, thou God of truth.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A READING

1 Corinthians 1: 18-31

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,    and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’ Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.’

ADDRESS

RESPONSORY

Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

For thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, thou God of truth.

HYMN

Before the ending of the day,

creator of the world, we pray

that thou with wonted love wouldst keep

thy watch around us while we sleep.

O let no evil dreams be near,

or phantoms of the night appear;

our ghostly enemy restrain,

lest aught of sin our bodies stain.

To thee, O saving Three in One,

let homage due by all be done;

and grant us, by the cross restored,

to share the Victor’s great reward. Amen.

POEM

CALLED TO BECOME

You are called to become A perfect creation. No one is called to become Who you are called to be. It does not matter How short or tall Or thick-set or slow You may be. It does not matter Whether you sparkle with life Or are as silent as a still pool. Whether you sing your song aloud Or weep alone in darkness. It does not matter Whether you feel loved and admired Or unloved and alone For you are called to become A perfect creation. No one’s shadow Should cloud your becoming. No one’s light Should dispel your spark. For the Lord delights in you. Jealously looks upon you And encourages with gentle joy Every movement of the Spirit Within you. Unique and loved you stand. Beautiful or stunted in your growth But never without hope and life. For you are called to become A perfect creation. This becoming may be Gentle or harsh. Subtle or violent. But it never ceases. Never pauses or hesitates. Only is— Creative force— Calling you Calling you to become A perfect creation.

Edwina Gately

3 To be a light to lighten the Gentiles ■

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy        Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

 Liturgy of the Palms

 GREETING

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father

and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all

and also with you.

STARTING TO WORSHIP

Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest!

 INTRODUCTION

Today begins the week of all weeks.

This is the week in which we follow our Saviour Jesus Christ on the way of suffering to the Cross and on the way to victory through the Cross to the Resurrection.

Today we gather with the crowds on the road to Jerusalem, to greet our Lord as he begins his journey, to sing his praise and to welcome him to his city.

We rejoice with all our hearts and voices in the knowledge that, if we do not speak out his praises, the stones themselves will sing.

 O Lord, open our lips

and our mouth will proclaim your praise!

 Opening Hymn: CH570 “Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising” (vs. 2-4)

Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising, give me joy in my heart, I pray; give me joy in my heart, keep me praising, keep me praising till the break of day.

Sing hosanna, sing hosanna, Sing hosanna to the King of kings! Sing hosanna, sing hosanna, Sing hosanna to the King!

Give me peace in my heart, keep me loving, give me peace in my heart, I pray; give me peace in my heart, keep me loving, keep me loving till the break of day.

Give me love in my heart, keep me serving, give me love in my heart, I pray; give me love in my heart, keep me serving, keep me serving till the break of day.

Traditional

  1. 1 based on Matthew 25: 8

The Psalm Gospel: Matthew 21: 1-11

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

“Say to Daughter Zion,

‘See, your king comes to you,

gentle and riding on a donkey,

and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Hymn: CH238 “Ride on, ride on in majesty”

Ride on, ride on in majesty!

hark, all the tribes ‘Hosanna’ cry;

O Saviour meek, pursue thy road

with palms and scattered garments strowed.

Ride on, ride on in majesty!

in lowly pomp ride on to die;

O Christ, thy triumphs now begin

o’er captive death and conquered sin.

Ride on, ride on in majesty!

the angel armies of the sky

look down with sad and wondering eyes

to see the approaching sacrifice.

Ride on, ride on in majesty!

thy last and fiercest strife is nigh;

the Father on his sapphire throne

awaits his own anointed Son.

Ride on, ride on in majesty!

in lowly pomp ride on to die;

bow your meek head to mortal pain,

then take, O God, thy power, and reign.

Henry H. Milman (1791-1868) altd.

based on Matthew 21: 8-9;

Zechariah 9:9

The Psalm: Psalm 118: 1-2, 19-29

Refrain: I will give thanks to you, for you have become my salvation.

1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

his mercy endures for ever.

2 Let Israel now proclaim,

‘His mercy endures for ever.’

I will give thanks to you, for you have become my salvation.

19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,

that I may enter and give thanks to the Lord.

20 This is the gate of the Lord;

the righteous shall enter through it.

I will give thanks to you, for you have become my salvation.

21 I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me

and have become my salvation.

22 The stone which the builders rejected

has become the chief cornerstone.

23 This is the Lord’s doing,

and it is marvellous in our eyes.

I will give thanks to you, for you have become my salvation.

 24 This is the day that the Lord has made;

we will rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Come, O Lord, and save us we pray.

Come, Lord, send us now prosperity.

26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;

we bless you from the house of the Lord.

27 The Lord is God; he has given us light;

link the pilgrims with cords

right to the horns of the altar.

I will give thanks to you, for you have become my salvation.

 28 You are my God and I will thank you;

you are my God and I will exalt you.

29 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

his mercy endures for ever.

I will give thanks to you, for you have become my salvation.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Let us pray for a closer union with Christ in his suffering and in his glory.

Silence is kept.

 Almighty and everlasting God, who, in your tender love towards the human race, sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon him our flesh

and to suffer death upon the cross: Grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 Liturgy of the Passion

 The Second Reading: Philippians 2: 5-11

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing

by taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself

by becoming obedient to death—

even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Hymn: CH217 “All glory, laud and honour”

All glory, laud, and honour

to thee, Redeemer, King,

to whom the lips of children

made sweet hosannas ring.

You are the King of Israel,

thou David’s royal Son,

who in the Lord’s name comest,

the King and blessed one:

The company of angels

are praising thee on high;

and mortal flesh, and all things

created, make reply:

The people of the Hebrews

with palms to meet thee went;

our praise and prayer and anthems

before you we present:

To thee, before thy Passion

they sang their hymns of praise;

to thee, now high exalted,

our melody we raise:

Thou didst receive their praises,

accept the prayers we bring,

who in all good delightest,

thou good and gracious King:

St. Theodulf of Orleans (d. 821)

  1. John Mason Neale (1818-66) altd.

based on Matthew 21: 8-9

The Passion Gospel: Matthew 27: 11-54

 The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew:

Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.

Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus Barabbas. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.

While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.

“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.

“Barabbas,” they answered.

“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked.

They all answered, “Crucify him!”

“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”

All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”

Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is Jesus, the king of the Jews.

Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).

When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”

Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

 This is the Passion of the Lord.

 SERMON

COLLECT OF THE READINGS

Merciful God,

your strength and courage pour forth

to sustain the witness of your faithful people;

awaken in us the humility to serve

wherever creation is broken and in need

, that we may follow in the way of our brother, Jesus,

die to all that separates us from you,

and with him be raised to new life. Amen.

 Response

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

 PENITENCE AND INTERCESSION

We say sorry to God and ask him for his help:

For forgiveness for the many times we have denied Jesus,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For grace to seek out those habits of sin which mean

spiritual death,

and by prayer and self-discipline to overcome them,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For Christian people,

that through the suffering of disunity

there may grow a rich union in Christ,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For those who make laws, interpret them, and administer them,

that our common life may be ordered in justice and mercy,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For those who still make Jerusalem a battleground,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For those who have the courage and honesty to work openly for justice and peace,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For those in the darkness and agony of isolation,

that they may find support and encouragement,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For those who, weighed down with hardship, failure, or sorrow, feel that God is far from them,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For those who are tempted to give up the way of the cross,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

That we, with those who have died in faith,

may find mercy in the day of Christ,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

Holy God,

holy and strong,

holy and immortal,

have mercy upon us.

ARCHBISHOP’S PRAYER IN THE TIME OF THE CORONAVIRUS

Listen to and pray along with Archbishop Jackson as he provides background to his prayer and reads it:

Almighty and All-loving God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

we pray to you through Christ the Healer

for those who suffer from the Coronavirus Covid-19

in Ireland and across the world.

We pray for all who reach out to those who mourn the loss

of each and every person who has died as a result of contracting the disease.

Give wisdom to policymakers,

skill to researchers,

comfort to everyone in distress

and a sense of calm to us all in these days of uncertainty and distress.

This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord

who showed compassion to the outcast,

acceptance to the rejected

and love to those to whom no love is shown. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn: CH235 “O sacred head, sore wounded

O sacred head, sore wounded,

with grief and scorn weighed down;

O kingly head, surrounded

with mocking crown of thorn;

What sorrow mars thy grandeur?

Can death thy bloom deflow’r?

O countenance whose splendour

The hosts of heav’n adore!

What language shall I borrow

to praise thee, dearest friend,

for this thy dying sorrow,

thy pity without end?

O agony and dying!

O love to sinners free!

Jesus, all grace supplying,

turn thou thy face on me.

In this thy bitter passion

Good Shepherd, think of me

with thy most sweet compassion,

unworthy though I be:

beneath thy cross abiding

for ever would I rest,

in thy dear love confiding,

and with thy presence blessed.

 Be thou my consolation,

my shield, when I must die;

remind me of thy passion

when my last hour draws nigh.

Mine eyes shall then behold thee,

upon thy cross shall dwell,

my heart by faith enfold thee;

who dieth thus, dies well.

MORNING PRAYER FOR USE ON SUNDAY

The FIFTH Sunday in Lent (passion sunday)

The Gathering of God’s People

 INTRODUCTION

We have come together

in the name of Christ

to offer our praise and thanksgiving,

to hear and receive God’s holy word,

to seek the forgiveness of our sins,

and to pray for the needs of the world,

that by the power of the Holy Spirit

we may give ourselves to the service of God.

 O Lord, open our lips,

and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

 Let us worship the Lord.

All praise to his name.

 Blessed are you,

God of compassion and mercy,

to you be praise and glory for ever.

In the darkness of our sin,

your light breaks forth like the dawn

and your healing springs up for deliverance.

As we rejoice in the gift of your saving help,

sustain us with your bountiful Spirit

and open our lips to sing your praise.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God for ever.

Hymn of Praise: CH104 “O for a thousand tongues to sing”(vs. 1, 2, 4 and 6)

O for a thousand tongues to sing

my dear Redeemer’s praise,

the glories of my God and King,

the triumphs of his grace!

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,

that bids our sorrows cease;

’tis music in the sinner’s ears,

’tis life, and health, and peace!

He speaks; and, listening to his voice,

new life the dead receive;

the mournful broken hearts rejoice;

the humble poor believe.

My gracious Master and my God,

assist me to proclaim,

to spread through all the earth abroad

the honours of your name.

 SENTENCES OF SCRIPTURE

Your word is a lantern to my feet

and a light upon our path.                                  cf Psalm 119:105

O Lord, your word is everlasting:

it stands firm for ever in the heavens.                          cf Psalm 119: 89

 Let us then receive the word of the Lord:

so may the light of your presence shine into our hearts.

 Proclaiming and Receiving the Word

 Ezekiel 37: 1-14

The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me to and fro among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ I said, ‘Sovereign Lord, you alone know.’

Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones and say to them, “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.”’

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.

Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.”’ So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet – a vast army.

Then he said to me: ‘Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, “Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.” Therefore prophesy and say to them: “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.”’

 The Second Reading: Romans 8: 6-11

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

After the reading silence may be kept.

 Hymn before the Gospel: CH293 “Breathe on me, Breath of God”

Breathe on me, Breath of God,

fill me with life anew,

that I may love what thou dost love,

and do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,

until my heart is pure;

until with thee I will my will

to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,

till I am wholly thine;

until this earthly part of me

glows with thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,

so shall I never die,

but live with thee the perfect life

for all eternity.

Edwin Hatch (1835-89)

based on Job 33: 4

John 11: 1-45

Now a man named Lazarus was ill. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay ill, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) So the sisters sent word to Jesus, ‘Lord, the one you love is ill.’

When he heard this, Jesus said, ‘This illness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.’ Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was two more days, and then he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go back to Judea.’

‘But Rabbi,’ they said, ‘a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?’

Jesus answered, ‘Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the day-time will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.’

After he had said this, he went on to tell them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.’

His disciples replied, ‘Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.’ Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.

So then he told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.’

Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, ‘Let us also go, that we may die with him.’On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

‘Lord,’ Martha said to Jesus, ‘if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.’

Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’

Martha answered, ‘I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’

Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’

‘Yes, Lord,’ she replied, ‘I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.’

After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. ‘The Teacher is here,’ she said, ‘and is asking for you.’ When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. ‘Where have you laid him?’ he asked.

‘Come and see, Lord,’ they replied.

Jesus wept.

Then the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’

But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?’

Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. ‘Take away the stone,’ he said.

‘But, Lord,’ said Martha, the sister of the dead man, ‘by this time there is a bad odour, for he has been there four days.’

Then Jesus said, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?’

So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, ‘Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.’

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth round his face.

Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.’

Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.

After the reading silence may be kept.

 THE SERMON

 COLLECT OF THE WORD

Life-giving God,

your Son came into the world

to free us all from sin and death:

breathe upon us with the power of your Spirit,

that we may be raised to new life in Christ,

and serve you in holiness and righteousness all our days;

through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

 The Response to God’s Word

 THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

PENITENCE

Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God,

though we have rebelled against him.                                      Daniel 9: 9

O God, our loving Father in heaven,

we confess that we have sinned against you;

we have broken your commandments;

we have often been selfish,

and we have not loved you as we should.

For these, and all our sins, forgive us, we pray:

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

May the God of love

bring us back to himself,

forgive us our sins,

and assure us of his eternal love

in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

We pray to the Lord for courage to give up other things and to give ourselves to him this Lent.

Give your Church the courage to give up her preoccupation with herself and to give more time to your mission in the world.

[We pray for …]

May the blood and water flowing from the side of Jesus

bring forgiveness to your people and help us to face the cost of proclaiming salvation.

Lord, meet us in the silence,

give us strength and hear our prayer.

 Give your world the courage

to give up war, bitterness and hatred,

and to seek peace. [We pray for …]

May the shoulders of the risen Jesus, once scourged by soldiers, bear the burden of political and military conflict in our world.

Lord, meet us in the silence, give us strength and hear our prayer.

Give us the courage

to give up quarrels, strife and jealousy

in our families, neighbourhoods and communities. [We pray for …]

May the presence of the risen Jesus, his body once broken and now made whole, bring peace and direction as we live with one another.

Lord, meet us in the silence, give us strength and hear our prayer.

Give us the courage to give up our selfishness as we live for others,

and to give time, care and comfort to the sick.

[We pray for …]

May the wounded hands of Jesus bring his healing touch,

and the light of his presence fill their rooms. Lord, meet us in the silence, give us strength and hear our prayer.

Give us the courage to give up our fear of death

and to rejoice with those who have died in faith.

[Especially we hold … in our minds.]

May the feet of the risen Lord Jesus, once nailed to the cross,

walk alongside the dying and bereaved in their agony, and walk with us and all your Church through death to the gate of glory.

Lord, meet us in the silence,

give us strength and hear our prayer,

here and in eternity. Amen.

 THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Most merciful God,

who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ

delivered and saved the world:

Grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross,

we may triumph in the power of his victory;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 THE COLLECT OF THE SEASON OF LENT

Merciful Lord,

Grant your people grace to withstand the temptations

of the world, the flesh and the devil

and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Almighty and everlasting God,

you hate nothing that you have made

and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent:

Create and make in us new and contrite hearts

that we, worthily lamenting our sins

and acknowledging our wretchedness,

may receive from you, the God of all mercy,

perfect remission and forgiveness;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 PRAYER IN THE TIME OF ANY COMMON PLAGUE OR SICKNESS

O Almighty God the Lord of life and death, of health and sickness; Have pity

upon us miserable sinners, now visited with great sickness. Withdraw from

us this grievous affliction. Enlarge our charity to relieve those who need our

help. Bless the remedies applied to assist them. Give us prudence to see, and

vigour to use, those means which thy providence affords, for preventing and

alleviating such calamities. And, above all, teach us to know how frail and

uncertain our condition is, and so to number our days, that we may seriously

apply our hearts to that holy and heavenly wisdom, whilst we live here, which

may in the end bring us to life everlasting; through the merits and mediation

of Jesus Christ, thine only Son our Lord. Amen.

ARCHBISHOP’S PRAYER IN THE TIME OF THE CORONAVIRUS

Almighty and All-loving God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

we pray to you through Christ the Healer

for those who suffer from the Coronavirus Covid-19

in Ireland and across the world.

We pray for all who reach out to those who mourn the loss

of each and every person who has dies as a result of contracting the disease.

Give wisdom to policymakers,

skill to researchers,

comfort to everyone in distress

and a sense of calm to us all in these days of uncertainty and distress.

This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord

who showed compassion to the outcast,

acceptance to the rejected

and love to those to whom no love is shown. Amen.

 THE LORD’S PRAYER

Gathering our prayers and praises into one, we are bold to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven:

     hallowed be thy name,

     thy kingdom come,

     thy will be done,

     on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

     And forgive us our trespasses

     as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

     but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory

     for ever and ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn: T&P 100 “My hope is built on nothing less”

My hope is built on nothing less

than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand –

all other ground is sinking sand,

all other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness seems to hide his face,

I rest on his unchanging grace

in every high and stormy gale,

my anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, his covenant, his blood

support me in the whelming flood;

when all around my soul gives way,

he then is all my hope and stay.

When he shall come with trumpet sound,

O may I then in him be found,

dressed in his righteousness alone,

faultless to stand before the throne.

INVITATION TO WORSHIP

Praise God who loves us. Praise God who cares.

 PRAISING AND THANKING GOD

We praise you, our God, for all mothers who have loved and laughed and laboured as they cared for their children. Blessed be God for ever.

 We praise you, our God, for all mothers who have wept in sorrow and joy for their children. Blessed be God for ever.

 We praise you, our God, for Jesus, born of a woman and nurtured in her love, and for Mary, a reminder of your patient, waiting love. Blessed be God for ever.

 SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE

As a mother comforts a child so will I comfort you, says the Lord.

Isaiah 66:13

INTRODUCTION

We thank God for mothers and carers around the world. It takes a very special love to care for a family. Today we’ll celebrate that love and thank God for his own perfect love for us all.

We’re not all mothers ourselves but we all have a mother, whether or not they are still with us, and we are all children of God. He is our loving Father but is also the one who remembers and comforts us as a mother comforts her child, and draws us close as a hen protects her chicks.

 OPENING PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

We thank you for mothers and carers everywhere,

and for the special love they have for their children.

We thank you Jesus for your special care and comfort

and the perfect love you have for us all.

Help us all to show your love to those who care for us,

and to the people that we meet in our lives. Amen.

 SORRY

We call to mind our sin, our failure to value the love of others and our failure to love as Christ has loved us.

Silence for reflection

Your love gives us life from the moment of conception. We fail to live as your children. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

You call us to do good.

We seek our own good. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

You hear us when we cry for help.

We ignore the cries of others. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

May the Father of all mercies cleanse us from our sins, and restore us in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn of Praise: CH712 “Tell out, my soul”

Listen to and sing along with this hymn at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6ji4y9Q-K0

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord: unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name: make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age to same; his holy name, the Lord, the Mighty One.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might:

powers and dominions lay their glory by;

proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,

the hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word: firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children’s children and for evermore.

Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926)

based on the Canticle ‘Magnificat’ (Luke 1: 46-55)

PRAYER OF MOTHERING SUNDAY

God of compassion, whose Son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary, shared the life of a home in Nazareth, and on the cross drew the whole human family to himself: Strengthen us in our daily living that in joy and in sorrow we may know the power of your presence to bind together and to heal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The First Reading: 1 Samuel 1: 20-28

So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, ‘Because I asked the Lord for him.’

When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfil his vow, Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, ‘After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.’

‘Do what seems best to you,’ her husband Elkanah told her. ‘Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good his word.’ So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, and she said to him, ‘Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he shall be given over to the Lord.’ And he worshipped the Lord there.

 The Psalm: Psalm 127: 1-4

1 Unless the Lord builds the house,• those who build it labour in vain.

2 Unless the Lord keeps the city,• the guard keeps watch in vain.

3 It is in vain that you hasten to rise up early go so late to rest, eating the bread of toil,• for he gives his beloved sleep. 4 Children are a heritage from the Lord• and the fruit of the womb is his gift.

 The Second Reading: Colossians 3: 12-17

The reading below may be read, or an audio version listened to at:

https://www.biblica.com/bible/niv/colossians/3/

 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

 Hymn: CH517 “Brother, sister, let me serve you” (vs 1-5)

Listen to and sing along with this hymn at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_ufwqwquqY

Brother, sister, let me serve you,

let me be as Christ to you.

Pray that I may have the grace to

let you be my servant, too.

 We are pilgrims on a journey, and companions on the road; we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you in the night-time of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear. I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh I’ll laugh with you; I will share your joy and sorrow, till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven

we shall find such harmony,

born of all we’ve known together

of Christ’s love and agony.

 The Gospel: John 19: 25-27

The reading below may be read, or an audio version listened to at:

https://www.biblica.com/bible/niv/john/19/

 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing near by, he said to her, ‘Woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

COLLECT OF THE READINGS

God of mercies,

your only Son, while hanging on the cross,

appointed Mary, his mother,

to be his beloved disciple’s mother too.

May we follow her good example

and always care for others

for the sake of Jesus Christ our Saviour

through whose name we pray. Amen.

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory

for ever and ever.

Amen.

Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning,

give me oil in my lamp, I pray;

give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning,

keep me burning ’til the break of day.

Sing hosanna, sing hosanna,

sing hosanna to the King of kings!

Sing hosanna, sing hosanna

Sing hosanna to the King!

Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising,

give me joy in my heart, I pray;

Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising,

keep me praising till the break of day.

Give me love in my heart, keep me serving,

give me love in my heart, I pray;

give me love in my heart, keep me serving,

keep me serving ’til the break of day.

DISMISSAL PRAYER

Let us rejoice

that we are precious to God.

May his blessing touch our families

and all who are precious to us.

May we, as the family of God,

shine as precious stones

reflecting his love to the world. Amen.

Biodiversity – March

Wicklow County Council recently organised a meeting in Ashford: “Let’s Get Buzzing! Community Actions for Biodiversity”. A range of presentations covering swifts (installing nest boxes to encourage nesting), biodiversity’s role in climate action, waterways and the all-Ireland pollinator plan informed all present of the immediacy of retaining our biodiversity. Leaving uncut grass; growing openpollinated flower varieties; maintaining corridors to connect habitat suitable for wildlife, clean water, fish passes; creating habitat for nesting solitary bees – it transpires that bumblebees and solitary bees are far more important for pollination than honey bees, so are essential for many of our crop foods. Daffodils, those wonderfully cheerful harbingers of spring, sadly are not pollinated by bees, so be sure to plant other spring flowers as well. The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan (available on-line) provides invaluable, detailed information regarding pollinators, for individuals, groups, townies, farmers – everyone. If we all do a little, a lot can be achieved: by providing the correct habitat, there will be more insects, which both pollinate our food and provide food for wildlife, enriching life all round.

Prayer Point March

Please pray for: * Strength to help those in need * Thankfulness for those, like St Patrick, who have passed on the Christian message to the next generation   * Forgiveness for those who have done us wrong and from those whom we have wronged * The elderly of the parish

Please also remember and give thanks for the faithful departed

Ashford Country Fair

Ashford Country Fair is Killiskey Parish’s main fund-raising activity. This year it will take place in Rossana estate on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May. The success of the event in  previous years has led to a demand for additional car parking which can be accommodated in the new venue. Our grateful thanks go to the Freeman family who have hosted the fair in the Bel-Air hotel for the last seven years.

To advertise this event, a float  will be entered in the St Patrick’s Day parade in Wicklow Town.

The Country Fair committee is now in full swing. If you can help in any way with this important fund-raiser, please contact Bernadette Glover, Amanda Mooney or Lesley Rue.

Mothers’ Union March

On 16th March the parish Mothers’ Union branch members are invited to a Fun Night in Greystones with its branch. There will be a Mothers’ Union area service or meeting with Arklow on Wednesday 25th March. On 29th March members are encouraged to attend a service in St Patrick’s Cathedral at 3.15pm when the Worldwide President, Sheran Harper, will be the speaker.  For further details, please contact Jessica Clarke or Sally Smith.
