EVENING PRAYER – Wednesday 6th April 2022

The Greeting

“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”

Matthew 21 v 9

As God’s people we have gathered here, let us worship and pray together.

Introduction

Loving God, we have come together to worship and praise your name,

to confess our sins and receive your forgiveness,

to listen to your Holy Word and

to bring our concerns and needs to you in prayer.

Penitence – Let us confess our sins to God our Father.

Lord God you sent your Son to reconcile us to yourself and to one another.

Lord, have mercy                           Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you heal the wounds of sin and division.

Christ, have mercy                         Christ, have mercy.

Holy Spirit, through you we put to death the sins of the body – and live.

Lord, have mercy                           Lord, have mercy.

Merciful Lord, grant to your faithful people pardon and peace,

that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Psalm 56 – A prayer for help when the psalmist was attacked by his enemies.

Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack. My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me.

Refrain

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid.                                                                 What can mere mortals do to me?

All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin.
They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps, hoping to take my life.
Because of their wickedness do not let them escape; in your anger, God, bring the nations down.Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll — are they not in your record?
Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me.

Refrain

10 In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise—
11 in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?

12 I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you.
13 For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Canticle – Ecce Nunc

Come bless the Lord all you servants of the Lord,

you that by night stand in the house of the Lord.

Lift up your hands towards the holy place and bless the Lord,

may the Lord bless you from Zion, the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,                                                                                                                as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Reading – Luke 18 verses 31 – 34 – Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.

32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.”

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.

Few thoughts

The Creed.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist?                                                             We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again?                                                                     We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world?                     We believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church.

This is our faith.

We believe and trust in One God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

Prayers

The Lord be with you                                and also with you

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever.  Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Hosanna, Son of David                             Response – Hear our prayer

Evening Prayer Collect

Lighten our darkness O Lord, we pray and in your great mercy,

defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;

for the love of your only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

The Blessing

Christ draw you to himself and grant that you find in his cross; a sure ground for faith, a firm support for hope and the assurance of sins forgiven and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you always. Amen.
