WEDNESDAY 3 JUNE EVENING PRAYER

GREETING

The light and peace of Jesus Christ be with you

And also with you.

PREPARATION

Faithful God, who fulfilled the promises of Easter by sending us your Holy Spirit, and made known to every race and nation the way of eternal life; open our lips by your Spirit, that every tongue may tell of your glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PENITENCE

Christ the light of the world has come to dispel the ourselves and confess our sins.

Silence is kept for one minute

Let us admit to God the sin which always confronts us:

Lord God, we have sinned against you; we have done evil in your sight. We are sorry and repent. Have mercy on us according to your love. Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin. Renew a right spirit within us and restore us to the joy of your salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

May the God of love and power forgive you and free your from your sins, heal and strengthen you by the Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.

VERSICLES AND RESPONSES

O Lord, we call to you: come to us quickly.

Hear us when we cry to you.

Let our prayers rise up before you like incense.

Let our lifted hands be like an evening sacrifice.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

A READING

St Mark 12:18-27

Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question, saying, ‘Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first married and, when he died, left no children; and the second married her and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise; none of the seven left children. Last of all the woman herself died. In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had married her.’

Jesus said to them, ‘Is not this the reason you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the story about the bush, how God said to him, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? He is God not of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong.’

ADDRESS

SONG OF WORSHIP

Lord, I come to you

Lord I come to you let my heart be changed, renewed, flowing from the grace that I found in you. And Lord I’ve come to know the weaknesses I see in me will be stripped away by the power of your love.

Hold me close, let your love surround me. Bring me near, draw me to your side. And as I wait I’ll rise up like the eagle, and I will soar with you, your Spirit leads me on, in the power of your love.

Lord unveil my eyes, let me see you face to face, the knowledge of your love as you live in me. Lord renew my mind as your will unfolds in my life, in living every day by the power of your love.

PRAISE

Blessed are you, Lord God, King of the universe.

To you be glory and praise for ever.

From the rising of the sun to its setting your name is proclaimed in all the world.

To you be glory and praise for ever.

When the times had fully come you sent the Sun of Righteousness.

In him the fullness of your glory dwells. To you be glory and praise for ever.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world:

a light no darkness can quench.
