MARY MAGDALENE, 22 JULY 2020: COMPLINE
PREPARATION
OPENING PRAYER
Stand
The Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.
A SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
Brethren, be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking
whom he may devour: whom resist, steadfast in the faith.
1 Peter 5: 8, 9
VERSICLES AND RESPONSES
O heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth,
Who are in all places and fill all things;
Treasurer of blessings and Giver of life,
come and dwell within us,
and cleanse us from every blemish,
and save our souls, O Blessed One.
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One,
have mercy on us.
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil. Amen.
CONFESSION
A prayerful examination of the past day may be undertaken after which the following words of penitence are used
We confess to God Almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
That we have sinned in thought, word, and deed,
Through our own grievous fault.
Wherefore we pray God to have mercy upon us.
Almighty God, have mercy upon us,
Forgive us all our sins,
Deliver us from all evil,
Confirm and strengthen us in all goodness,
And bring us to life everlasting; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us;
O Lord, cleanse us of our sins.
O Master, forgive our transgressions;
O Holy One, come to us and heal our infirmities for
your name’s sake.
THE WORD OF GOD
PSALM
Psalm 63
Refrain: My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God.
1 O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you;
♦︎
my soul is athirst for you.
2 My flesh also faints for you,
♦︎
as in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.
3 So would I gaze upon you in your holy place,
♦︎
that I might behold your power and your glory.
4 Your loving
-kindness is better than life itself
♦︎
and so my lips shall praise you.
5 I will bless you as long as I live
♦︎
and lift up my hands in your name.
My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God.
6 My soul shall be satisfied, as with marrow and fatness,
♦︎
and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,
7 When I remember you upon my bed
♦︎
and meditate on you in the watches of the night.
8 For you have been my helper
♦︎
and under the shadow of your wings will I rejoice.
9 My soul clings to you;
♦︎
your right hand shall hold me fast.
My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God.
10 But those who seek my soul to destroy it
♦︎
shall go down to the depths of the earth;
11 Let them fall by the edge of the sword
♦︎
and become a portion for jackals.
12 But the king shall rejoice in God;
all those who swear by him shall be glad,
♦︎
for the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.
My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God.
Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,

is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
A READING
Mark 15: 40 – 16: 8
There were also women looking on from a distance; among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the
mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. These used to follow him and provided for him when
he was in Galilee; and there were many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
When evening had come, and since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Joseph
of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom
of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate wondered if he were already dead;
and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for some time. When he learned
from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, and
taking down the body, wrapped it in the linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock.
He then rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw
where the body was laid.
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so
that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they
went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the
entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been
rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right
side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth,
who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his
disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.’ So
they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to
anyone, for they were afraid.
ADDRESS
RESPONSORY
Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
For thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, thou God of truth.
VERSICLE AND RESPONSE
The following responsory may be said:
Keep me as the apple of an eye.
Hide me under the shadow of thy wings.
Preserve us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping,
that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.
THE GOSPEL CANTICLE
NUNC DIMITTIS The Song of Simeon Luke 2: 29-32
1 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, ■
according to thy word.
2 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, ■
which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
3 To be a light to lighten the Gentiles ■
and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, ■
and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, ■
is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Preserve us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping,
that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.
THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord.
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
VERSICLES AND RESPONSES
Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us
that thy people may rejoice in thee?
O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us
and grant us thy salvation.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this night without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us.
O Lord, hear our prayer
and let our cry come unto thee.
Let us pray.
THANKSGIVING
Every night I will bless you,
and I will praise your name for ever.
You have been our refuge in generation and generation.
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.
For in you is the fountain of light:
in your light shall we see light.
PRAYER FOR PROTECTION
O God,
who at all times and at every hour,
in heaven and on earth,
are worshipped and glorified,
who are long suffering, plenteous in mercy, most compassionate,
who love the righteous and have mercy on sinners,
who call all to salvation
:
Receive, O Lord our prayers at this hour, And guide our life toward your commandments.
Sanctify our souls, Make chaste our bodies
,
Set aright our minds, Cleanse our thoughts, And deliver us from every sorrow, evil and pain.
Encompass us with your holy angels, So that guarded and guided by their watch, We may attain to the unity of the faith And to the knowledge of your ineffable glory
,
for you are blessed for ever. Amen.
COLLECTS
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
bring us to the dwelling which thy Son is preparing
for all who love thee:
give us the will each day to live in life eternal;
let our citizenship be in heaven with the blessed,
with the whole company of the redeemed
and with countless angels,
praising, worshipping and adoring thy Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
who sitest upon the throne for ever and ever. Amen.
Lord God,
thou hast surrounded us with so great a cloud of witnesses.
Grant that we, encouraged by their example, may persevere
in the course that is set before us and, at the last,
share in thy eternal joy with all the saints in light,
through Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord,
who liveth and reigneth with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE ENDING
