Eco Tips October

With rising energy costs, the need to reduce our use of all forms of energy is paramount, both to lower costs and to minimise the risk of power outages. Below are a few simple steps we could all follow.

1. Heat your house less (lower temperature, shorter time). Don’t heat rooms that are never used. Wear warm clothes.

2. Turn off all switches, appliances, devices and lights that are not in use; don’t leave any on standby. If you leave a room for any length of time, turn off the radio or TV, switch off lights.

3. Wash clothes that need to be cleaned, not just ironed. Tumble driers use a lot of electricity; better options are outdoor clothes lines, weather permitting, or indoor clothes horses – heated driers are available. Ventilate the room when clothes are being dried indoors. De-humidifiers can make rooms seem warmer by drying out the air.

4. Is hot water really necessary all day long?

5. Electric showers use a lot of electricity, reduce the time spent showering.

6. When using an oven, be sure to cook more than one item at a time.

7. Use hand rather than electric appliances where feasible (whisks, sweeping brushes etc.).

8. Boil the amount of water needed rather than an entire kettle full. Save excess hot water in a flask.

9. Drive less and car-pool where possible; use public transport; walk; cycle

St Michael and All Angels – Wednesday 29th September

The light and peace of Christ be with you all,

And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God,

Who is worthy of all thanksgiving.

Blessed……. Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

Blessed be God forever. Amen

Psalm 148

1 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights above.
2 Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
3 Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars.
4 Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.

5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for at his command they were created,
6 and he established them for ever and ever— he issued a decree that will never pass away.

7 Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,
8 lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding,
9 you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds,
11 kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and all rulers on earth,
12 young men and women, old men and children.

13 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted;
his splendour is above the earth and the heavens.
14 And he has raised up for his people a horn, the praise of all his faithful servants of Israel, the people close to his heart.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever, Amen

Reading – Revelations 5 The Scroll and the Lamb

5 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals,
because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!”

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, for ever and ever!”

14 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

CANTICLE (SAID)

O Gracious Light

O Gracious light, pure brightness

of the everliving Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

and our eyes behold the vesper light,

we sing your praises, O God:

    Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times

to be praised by happy voices,

O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be

    glorified through all the worlds.

PENITENCE

Have mercy upon us,

most merciful Father;

in your compassion forgive us our sins,

known and unknown,

things done and left undone;

and so uphold us by your Spirit

that we may live and serve you in newness of life,

to the honor and glory of your Name;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy upon you,

pardon, and deliver you from all your sins,

THE WORD OF GOD

PSALM

Psalm 119: 33-40, 89-96

33  Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes ♦︎

and I shall keep it to the end.

34  Give me understanding and I shall keep your law; ♦︎

I shall keep it with my whole heart.

35  Lead me in the path of your commandments, ♦︎

   for therein is my delight.

36  Incline my heart to your testimonies ♦︎

   and not to unjust gain.

37  Turn away my eyes lest they gaze on vanities; ♦︎

O give me life in your ways.

38  Confirm to your servant your promise, ♦︎

which stands for all who fear you.

39  Turn away the reproach which I dread, ♦︎

   because your judgements are good.

40  Behold, I long for your commandments; ♦︎

in your righteousness give me life.

89  O Lord, your word is everlasting; ♦︎

it ever stands firm in the heavens.

90  Your faithfulness also remains from one generation to another; ♦︎

you have established the earth and it abides.

91  So also your judgements stand firm this day, ♦︎

for all things are your servants.

92  If your law had not been my delight, ♦︎

I should have perished in my trouble.

93  I will never forget your commandments, ♦︎

for by them you have given me life.

94  I am yours, O save me! ♦︎

For I have sought your commandments.

95  The wicked have waited for me to destroy me, ♦︎

but I will meditate on your testimonies.

96  I have seen an end of all perfection, ♦︎

but your commandment knows no bounds.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

A READING

Matthew 19: 16-30

Then someone came to him and said, ‘Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?’ And he said to him, ‘Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’ He said to him, ‘Which ones?’ And Jesus said, ‘You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ The young man said to him, ‘I have kept all these; what do I still lack?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, ‘Then who can be saved?’ But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.’

Then Peter said in reply, ‘Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold,* and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.

Evening Prayer

14th September, 2022.

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Psalm 94

Lord God, to whom vengeance belongs, O God to whom vengeance belongs, shine out in majesty.

Rise up, O judge of the earth; give the arrogant their just deserts.

Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

How long shall the evildoers boast and pour out such impudent words?

They crush your people, O Lord, and afflict your heritage. They murder the widow and the stranger; the orphans they put to death.

And yet they say, ‘The Lord will not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.’

Consider, most stupid of people; you fools, when will you understand?

He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? He that formed the eye, shall he not see?

He who corrects the nations, shall he not punish? He who teaches the peoples, does he lack knowledge?

The Lord knows every human thought, that they are but a breath.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Opening prayer

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

As our evening prayer rises like incense before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

St. Luke 22:31-33, 54-62

‘Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death!’

Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house. But Peter was following at a distance. When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. Then a servant-girl, seeing him in the firelight, stared at him and said, ‘This man also was with him.’ But he denied it, saying, ‘Woman, I do not know him.’ A little later someone else, on seeing him, said, ‘You also are one of them.’ But Peter said, ‘Man, I am not!’ Then about an hour later yet another kept insisting, ‘Surely this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean.’ But Peter said, ‘Man, I do not know what you are talking about!’ At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, ‘Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times.’ And he went out and wept bitterly.

EVENING PRAYER – Wednesday 7th September 2022

The Gathering of God’s People

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all

and also with you.

We have come together in the name of Christ to offer our praise and thanksgiving,

to hear and receive God’s holy word, to seek the forgiveness of our sins,

and to pray for the needs of the world, that by the power of the Holy Spirit

we may give ourselves to the service of God.

Penitence

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith.

O God, our loving Father in heaven, we confess that we have sinned against you;

we have broken your commandments; we have often been selfish,

and we have not loved you as we should.

For these, and all our sins, forgive us, we pray: through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

All – May the God of love bring us back to himself, forgive us our sins,

and assure us of his eternal love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sentences

O Lord, open our lips,

and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

O God, make speed to save us

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Praise the Lord.

The Lord’s name be praised.

Psalm 89 verses 1- 18 – maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
through all generations.
I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant,
‘I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.’”

The heavens praise your wonders, Lord, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?

Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?
In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;
he is more awesome than all who surround him.
Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?  You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them.
10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.
11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it.
12 You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.
13 Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;

love and faithfulness go before you.
15
Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, Lord.
16 They rejoice in your name all day long; they celebrate your righteousness.
17
For you are their glory and strength, and by your favour you exalt our horn.
18 Indeed, our shield belongs to the Lord, our king to the Holy One of Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Reading – Luke 18 verses 18 – 30 – The Rich and the Kingdom of God

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honour your father and mother.’

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”

Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.                                                                                                                                     For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever.  Amen.
