WEDNESDAY, 17 NOVEMBER 2021:  COMPLINE

PREPARATION

OPENING PRAYER

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord

who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day follows.

Most merciful God,

we confess to you,

before the whole company of heaven and one another,

that we have sinned in thought, word and deed

and in what we have failed to do.

Forgive us our sins,

heal us by your Spirit

and raise us to new life in Christ. Amen.

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, ■

and shall be for ever. Amen.

HYMN (SAID)

Before the ending of the day,

creator of the world, we pray

that thou with wonted love wouldst keep

thy watch around us while we sleep.

O let no evil dreams be near,

or phantoms of the night appear;

our ghostly enemy restrain,

lest aught of sin our bodies stain.

Almighty Father, hear our cry

through Jesus  Christ, our Lord most high,

who with the Holy Ghost and thee

doth live and reign eternally. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

PSALMS

Psalm 124

If the Lord himself had not been on our side, ♦︎

now may Israel say;

If the Lord had not been on our side, ♦︎

when enemies rose up against us;

Then would they have swallowed us alive ♦︎

when their anger burned against us;

Then would the waters have overwhelmed us

and the torrent gone over our soul; ♦︎

over our soul would have swept the raging waters.

But blessed be the Lord ♦︎

who has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth.

Our soul has escaped

as a bird from the snare of the fowler; ♦︎

the snare is broken and we are delivered.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, ♦︎

who has made heaven and earth.

Psalm 125

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, ♦︎

which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever

As the hills stand about Jerusalem, ♦︎

so the Lord stands round about his people,

from this time forth for evermore.

The sceptre of wickedness shall not hold sway

over the land allotted to the righteous, ♦

lest the righteous turn their hands to evil.

Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, ♦︎

and to those who are true of heart.

Those who turn aside to crooked ways

the Lord shall take away with the evildoers; ♦︎

but let there be peace upon Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son ■

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, ■

and shall be for ever. Amen.

A READING

Mark 13: 9-23

‘As for yourselves, beware; for they will hand you over to councils; and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them. And the good news must first be proclaimed to all nations. When they bring you to trial and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say; but say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

‘But when you see the desolating sacrilege set up where it ought not to be (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains; someone on the housetop must not go down or enter the house to take anything away; someone in the field must not turn back to get a coat. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that it may not be in winter. For in those days there will be suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, no, and never will be. And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he has cut short those days. And if anyone says to you at that time, “Look! Here is the Messiah!”[ or “Look! There he is!”—do not believe it. False messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But be alert; I have already told you everything.

ADDRESS

RESPONSORY

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

For you have redeemed me, Lord God of truth.

I commend my spirit.

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit.

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

Keep me as the apple of an eye.

Hide me under the shadow of thy wings.

O King most blessed,

on the day of judgement

number us among your chosen.

PRAYERS

Hear my prayer, O Lord;

listen to my cry.

Keep me as the apple of your eye;

hide me in the shadow of your wings.

I will lie down in peace and take my rest,

for it is in God alone that I dwell unafraid.

That you will give us a quiet night and a perfect end:

we pray to you, O Lord.

That you will have mercy upon us and grant us your salvation:

we pray to you, O Lord.

That you will keep us this night without sin:

we pray to you, O Lord.

That you will guard us and give us your blessing:

we pray to you, O Lord.

That you will bring us with all your saints to glory everlasting:

we pray to you, O Lord.

That you would bless those whom we name now….

we pray to you, O Lord.

Let us commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray,

to the mercy and protection of God.

A period of silence is kept.

COLLECTS

God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

bring us to the dwelling which your Son is preparing

for all who love you;

give us the will each day to live in life eternal;

let our citizenship be in heaven with the blessed,

with the whole company of the redeemed

and with countless angels,

praising, worshipping and adoring your Son,

our Lord Jesus Christ,

who sits upon the throne for ever and ever. Amen.

Visit our homes, O Lord, we pray,

and drive far from them the snares of the enemy;

may your holy angels dwell with us and guard us in peace,

and may your blessing be always upon us;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Uniting our prayers with the whole company of heaven,

let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy Name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil. Amen.

THE ENDING

In peace we will lie down and sleep;

for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus,

for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning,

so do we look for you, O Christ.

May the light of Christ, the King of all,

shine ever brighter in our hearts,

that with all the saints in light

we may shine forth as lights in the world. Amen.
