THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
Opening Hymn: CH624 “Speak, Lord, in the stillness”
Speak, Lord, in the stillness
speak your word to me;
help me now to listen
in expectancy.
Speak, O gracious Master,
in this quiet hour;
let me see your face, Lord,
feel your touch of power.
For the words you give me,

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, he is faithful
and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1: 8, 9
Let us humbly confess our sins unto almighty God.
A GENERAL CONFESSION
Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have
followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have
left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to
have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare
thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises
declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we
may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is
in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, And
the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.
O Lord, open thou our lips
and our mouth shall show forth thy praise.
God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

A LESSON
from the Old Testament
1 Samuel 3: 1-10, 19
Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.
At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the
lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.
Then the Lord called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’* and he said, ‘Here I am!’ and ran to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called
me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call; lie down again.’ So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, ‘Samuel!’ Samuel
got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call, my son; lie down again.’
Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called
Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ Then Eli
perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, ‘Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall
say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” ’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant
is listening.’
As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.

O God, you search me and you know me.
All my thoughts lie open to your gaze.
When I walk or lie down, you are before me;

A LESSON
from the New Testament
1 Corinthians 6: 12-20
‘All things are lawful for me’, but not all things are beneficial. ‘All things are lawful for me’, but I will not be
dominated by anything. ‘Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food’, and God will destroy both one and
the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord
and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take
the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that whoever is united to a
prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, ‘The two shall be one flesh.’ But anyone united to the Lord
becomes one spirit with him. Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator
sins against the body itself. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you
have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.’ Nathanael said to him, ‘Can
anything good come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.’ When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards
him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’ Nathanael asked him, ‘Where did you come to know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you
under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’ And he said to him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see
heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’

A Prayer for the President and all in authority
Almighty God, who rulest over the kingdoms of the world; We commend to thy merciful care the people of this land,
that being guarded by thy providence, they may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of this State and to
all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness,
that they may serve thy people faithfully to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the Houses of the Oireachtas
Almighty God, source of all authority and wisdom: guide by your Spirit those who represent us in Dáil and Seanad.
As representatives of the people keep them humble, as legislators make them compassionate, and as politicians defend their integrity. So may the proceedings of the Oireachtas serve the truth and promote the common good. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the servant Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the Clergy and People
Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our Bishops and Clergy, and all
People committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon
them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that
thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially, we pray for the good estate of the Catholic Church; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life.
