GREETING
The Lord be with you
and also with you.

VERSICLES AND RESPONSES
Almighty God, come and revive us.
Shine upon us and we shall be saved.
God himself gives us his joy
and our land yields its fruit.
Justice will walk before him,
peace comes in his footsteps.
Praise to Him who is coming: the King, in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Amen.

PENITENCE
Let us confess our sins to God our Father.
Silence
Heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault;
by what we have done
and by what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life

THE WORD OF GOD
A PSALM
Psalm 79
O God, the nations have come into your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple;

to the birds of the air for food,
the flesh of your faithful to the wild animals of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was no one to bury them.
We have become a taunt to our neighbours,
mocked and derided by those around us.
How long, O Lord? Will you be angry for ever?

Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father

INTRODUCTION
We have come together in the name of Christ
to offer our praise and thanksgiving,
to hear and receive God’s holy word,

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word
The First Reading: Isaiah 64: 1-9
O that you would tear open the heavens and come down,
so that the mountains would quake at your presence—

When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect,

COLLECT OF THE WORD
Eternal God,
through long generations you prepared a way
for the coming of your Son,

The First Reading: Ezekiel 37: 1-14
The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in
the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all round them; there were very many lying in the
valley, and they were very dry. He said to me, ‘Mortal, can these bones live?’ I answered, ‘O Lord God,
you know.’ Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of
the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I
will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in
you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.’
So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and
the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come
upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to
the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O
breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.’ I prophesied as he commanded me, and the
breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude.
Then he said to me, ‘Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, “Our bones are dried
up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.” Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the
Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will
bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and
bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will
place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the
Lord.’
The Psalm: Psalm 126
1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
our tongue with shouts of;
then it was said among the nations,
‘The Lord has done great things for them.’
3 The Lord has done great things for,
and we rejoiced.
4 Restore our fortunes, O,
the watercourses in the Negeb.
5 May those who sow in tears
with shouts of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
their sheaves.

The Second Reading: Revelation 1: 1-7
The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place; he
made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who testified to the word of God and to the
testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.
Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who
keep what is written in it; for the time is near.
John to the seven churches that are in Asia:
Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits
who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the
ruler of the kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, 6made us to be a kingdom, priests serving
his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Look! He is coming with the clouds;
eye will see him,
even those who pierced him;
on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail.
So it is to be. Amen.

The Gospel: John 15: 9-17
“As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you
will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said
these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than
this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not
call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have
called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I heard from my Father. You did
not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the
Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may
love one another.”
SERMON
COLLECT FOR PEACE
Merciful God,
whose Son called the peacemakers blessèd,
remind us of the devastating effects of war
and, in the healing power of the Holy Spirit,
help us to exercise the ministry of reconciliation given to us
so that throughout the whole world
the knowledge of your love may be known
and your kingdom of justice, joy and peace may come.
We ask this through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Preparation
GREETING
Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you
and also with you.
INTRODUCTION
This morning we give thanks for the lives of all those saints who have lived and died, and especially for
those dear to us.
We affirm that our relatives and friends who have died in faith are not forgotten and that they are known
to, loved by and cared for by God. We believe that as we entrust our lives to God so we may look forward
to being one day reunited with them.
Opening Hymn: 80 “Great is thy faithfulness”
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
there is no shadow of turning with Thee;
thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not
as thou hast been thou for ever wilt be.

The Lesson: Revelation 7: 9-17
After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all
tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with
palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying,
‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’
And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they
fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing,
‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
and thanksgiving and honour
and power and might
be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’
Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come
from?’ I said to him, ‘Sir, you are the one that knows.’
Then he said to me,
‘These are they who have come out of the great ordeal;
they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
For this reason they are before the throne of God,
and worship him day and night within his temple,
and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.
They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;
the sun will not strike them,
nor any scorching heat;
for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of the water of life,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’
This is the Word of the Lord.

The Gospel: Matthew 5: 1-12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.
Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely
on my account.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets

A world without saints forgets how to praise.
Their faith in acquiring the habit of prayer,

our world is their parish: their purpose is God.
Rejoice in those saints, unpraised and unknown,
